Android M, All You Need To Know – Google I/O 2015

As expected, Google announced their latest Android M release at Google I/O. And if you don’t know about Android then Google has a tradition of naming the versions of Android after deserts in alphabetical order. So, after Lollipop with letter “L” it is quite natural to think that the next Android version name should start with the letter “M” and while everyone is brainstorming at what possibly the name could be, my bet is on Marshmallow and Milkshake.
LOLLIPOP WITH ADDITIONAL FEATURES
So anyways, naming aside let’s take a look at what all Google really offers with the new Android M. Now honestly if you’re thinking to see some major difference and overhaul like we saw in the Jelly Bean or Lollipop update, then you might be a little disappointed. This time around Google has decided to work out on the basics of Android and make the user experience better, sort of Lollipop with additional features. And if you don’t care for those extra features that Google boasted for more than an hour, then you’re good with Lollipop. In fact the new update is so subtle in terms for an end-user in terms of looks and performance that the overall performance of the OS is just as same as Lollipop.

So well, let’s take a look at what all Google announced at Google I/O 2015 this year for Android M.

The new version of Android is expected to bring lots of new features, optimization and stability. Android M majorly focuses on RAM and Battery optimization. It also brings some new and interesting features like Android Pay which is certainly quite a lot similar to Apple Pay.

Android Pay

Android Pay is essentially a payment solution from Google that uses your Google Wallet to pay for your bills using NFC. Now this isn’t any new concept as it was already there a while ago even before Apple Pay. But certainly Google Wallet didn’t worked out for Google like Apple Pay did for Apple. So Google decided to change things up and get things up and running. The new Android Pay offers the virtual account that is connected to the end users actual account. So that when any payment is made through Android pay, it simply goes from the virtual account number that Google has created for you. What does that mean to you? Absolute safety, as while paying your actual account number won’t be shared with the payee hence lack in cyber-theft. Now with Android M it works a lot more seamlessly. Let’s say while paying your bills at McDonald’s with Android Pay, you don’t need to use any app or tap. But all you have to do is scan your finger with the fingerprint scanner and use the NFC for billing and the rest of the process with done by Google’s intelligent software. Now if it works then it can make you look like absolute BAWAS and if not, then an absolute douchebag. So do make sure to check the Android Pay tag before paying.

THE NEXT BIG FEATURE THAT GOOGLE ANNOUNCED AT GOOGLE I/O 2015 IS ‘DOZE’ WITH ANDROID M.

Doze on Android M

Doze is one of the most and pretty interesting feature of Android M as it sets your device on deep sleep when its not in use. Basically is uses the gyroscope and accelerometer on your device to determine if your device is moving or having any sorts of motion or not. And of course when it isn’t moving/ mo motion it sets your device on deep sleep mode just keeping some essential apps running in the background, which can easily be a big factor for saving the battery life for upto 2 times. But everything about it is on paper, and while thinking with other perspective you will realize that if there is some sensor on your device 24×7 determining if your device is in motion or not might just kill some more battery and they need to be powered. But well, it’s Google and whenever they do something they have lots of testing and research history in background. So I hope it works as it supposed to.

Fingerprint Sensor For Third Party Apps

Now since Google ensured that they will make sure to make proper use of fingerprint sensor on your Android device with Android M. They also announced that they will release API and all the necessary resources needed for the developers to use the fingerprint sensor on their Android Apps. Google encouraged App developers to make more and more use of the Fingerprint sensor for in-app purchases and other needful components.

Android M will Support USB Type-C

With the development of USB Type-C, Google already ensured that from now onwards most of the Google devices will support USB Type-C. And we have already seen that on the Google Chromebook 2015. On I/O 2015 Google promised that the next Nexus device will feature USB Type-C.

Simplified Volume Controls in Android M

Android M brings simplified volume controls to your Android devices running on Android M. Although before Android M we already saw this feature in some of the skinned UI from Samsung, LG, MiUi, etc. This was one of the factor that was wrong with stock Android all the time, but it’s good to see that Google noticed the need for it and integrated it on their latest version of Android M.
